exTras

Hey bub.  We’re still working on the basics here.  You expect extras?  Extras?!  I’ll show you extras, you ungrateful little…git!  Git off my lawn!  Dern kids…

…Ok, maybe I’ll give you a couple of extras.  In fact, I’ll give you more than you thought you were going to get.

I’ll tell you what we’re working on.

Expect to find here a list of Known Issues, Future Improvements, and Suggestions from you first lucky few.  If you find something wrong with the site, check here before you tell us.  If you see it here, we’re working on it with every minute of our salaried time. If you suggest an improvement, please note that we love you and thank you and that we’ll take it into consideration. Really, we will.

Known Issues

  1. Extras don’t contain ‘extras’
  2. Menu ‘buttons’ (actually words) don’t correspond to the icons behind them
  3. Some comics are hard to read. We’ve actually fixed most of them, but haven’t re-posted them yet. Update: re-worked comics posted! Tell us if any look wrong now, please.
  4. Some pages (archives, for example) don’t look like the others. What’s with the shift? Update: Most look ok now.  Please tell us if you find a page which looks wrong!
  5. It looks good on Firefox, but IE kills it. Why? (Note: Chrome’s ok too)
  6. _
  7. Number 5 on the “Known Issues” list is blank. Why?
  8. Number 7 on the “Known Issues” list incorrectly references #5, not #6. What the heck, man!
  9. Content on lower half of page does not go to edges of the background. (note: background will probably change on this half soon)
  10. Footer corners are white.  Come on.  Laaaaame. (Note: see FI #7)
  11. Non-comic blog posts appear on the archive calendar. We’re getting our hopes up that there are more comics than normal here. Fix it.
  12. The “Search” page really looks funny and needs to be fixed.

Future Improvements

  1. Dual twitter feeds?
  2. How about a company store? (sure, when there’s somebody to buy stuff)
  3. Show multiple ‘blog’ posts below the comic (like Sheldon does). Update: We’re closer. The homepage looks right, but archive pages don’t display the blog yet.
  4. Put content on the ‘About’ and ‘Cast’ pages
  5. Get domain-specific email addresses (Thanks Cam & Jeff for the suggestions!)
  6. Put some basic google adds in that blank ‘ad’ spot
  7. Change the footer so it looks like it belongs there. Update: Woot!
  8. Re-vamp the bottom half of the page to give it a more unified look.  Possibly use a different background, and definitely eliminate the ‘boxy’ look of the center section.
  9. Pages will have better url names (i.e. ..rdcomic.com/extras) once I figure out how to do it. Yeah, that’s right. I figured it out.
  10. Make the Archive calendar go directly to the comic for that date.

Suggestions

  1. Change the darn text color.  It’s hard to read!
  2. When penguins molt, they look like they’ve been shot.  Work this into a comic!
  3. Track your email campaigns using campaign variables in Google Analytics.

Update, 4.2.09

Thanks everybody for your responses so far!  There have been some wonderful suggestions and a couple of crucial shortcomings pointed out.  I ask you to bear with us, as we really only have a couple of hours a week (if that) to try to fix things up.  Also, thanks a ton to those who have contributed potential solutions to our issues!

Update, 4.16.09

Well, hey! This here’s startin’ to resemble a comic website! Although much is left to do before our (tentative) May 1 launch, we’ve made some significant progress. Oh, and we’ve made some good comics, too. Aren’t you getting excited to share this with the world?! Yeah, you’ll be able to say “I knew them when they first didn’t know what they were doing.” That’s comic cred, man.

Update, 5.25.09

Things are looking up! For our long-time readers, you’ll notice that there’s a new comic occupying the ‘first’ spot. This officially puts us into what we’re calling our ’soft’ release. For the moment, the hope is to bring in new readers who are used to reading webcomics. We are currently developing a secret weapon to recruit and retain webcomic neophytes; don’t worry, you’ll know when we get it done, because it will be occupying this page.

But to make things crystal clear, feel free to invite whomever you’d like to the site!  We’re excited to have them here.  We’ll prep an extra padded cage just for them.
